GLENGLEN combines mutual learning in the Global North and Global South with inner-European exchange. European tandems from Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia as well as Germany form the project teams during a three-month internship in the Global South. They also visit three seminars together, where English is the working language. These experiences of peer-to-peer learning and a change of perspective are the foundation for GLEN participants' Global Learning Activity.
Do you like to perform artisanal work with your hands? Do you have educational or coaching skills? This host organisation is looking for two participants to support its artisanal, hands-on, vocational training programme. If you have specific knowledge of tailoring and dressmaking, this project internship might be for you. To participate you should enjoy working with young people and be able to communicate confidently in English.
The non-profit organisation, Volunteers for the Amelioration of Rural Areas (VARAS), has been working in rural development since 2007. VARAS strives to empower marginalised communities through various local and international volunteer programmes. It aims to improve access to and delivery of quality healthcare through medical internships. It also provides educational services through its running school construction projects and teaching programmes. Additionally, VARAS supports access to clean water and promotes sustainable environmental practices. VARAS addresses unemployment by organising income-generating projects and providing skills trainings. These projects include its women empowerment and entrepreneurship projects in animal rearing, tailoring, and dressmaking. Based in the city of Ho in Ghana’s eastern Volta Region, VARAS aims to bridge Ghana’s rural-urban development gap.
As a GLEN participant, you would support VARAS in the training phase of its dressmaking and tailoring entrepreneurship programme. You would shadow and assist local artisans training young men and women in dressmaking and tailoring skills. Additionally, you would support the apprentices with your own knowledge and expertise in tailoring. You would also create new clothing designs using local fabrics. After the training period, you would have the choice to work in one of VARAS’s school programmes. The project takes place in both Ho, at VARAS headquarters, and in Dzolokpuita, a city also located in Ghana’s eastern Volta Region.
The internship is scheduled, in consultation with the partner organisation, for three months between July and October 2019. Prior training and seminars will be held in English.
The GLEN team will be formed by a German participant and a Hungarian participant.
